UK Government rules out Sales Tax on Private Healthcare
The British government has confirmed it will not introduce a sales tax on private healthcare services, Health Minister Wes Streeting stated, following media reports suggesting the measure was under consideration before the November 26 budget.
Finance Minister Rachel Reeves, facing a fiscal gap projected in the tens of billions, is expected to announce other tax measures in November. Despite these pressures, she assured the public that VAT, national insurance contributions, and income tax rates will remain unchanged, aligning with the Labour Party’s manifesto commitments.
Reeves noted that the government will still face difficult decisions in finalising the budget plan, but the announcement provides clarity and stability for private healthcare providers, allowing the sector to plan ahead without the uncertainty of additional taxation.
The decision removes a potential cost pressure on private healthcare services while signalling the government’s intention to balance fiscal responsibility with sector support.
