Phoenix Equity Partners has made a significant strategic investment in Medmark, Ireland's largest occupational healthcare provider, understood to be in the region of €70 million. The transaction is subject to standard regulatory approvals, with co-founders Dr Robert Ryan and Paul O'Grady continuing to lead the business.
Medmark Limited (CRO 182438) was founded in 1987 and is headquartered in Dublin, providing occupational health, health screening, workplace medical assessment and employee wellbeing services to more than 500,000 employees across the island of Ireland. For FY2024, Medmark reported turnover of €17.13 million, up 21.6% year on year, with pretax profit of €4.36 million, more than double the prior year. Following its December 2025 acquisition of Belfast-based Blackwell Associates, Medmark operates from nine locations with combined annual revenue exceeding €20 million and approximately 160 staff including more than 70 occupational health physicians and nurses.
Phoenix Equity Partners is a London-based mid-market private equity firm focused on healthcare and education, with prior investments including Envisage and London Gynaecology.
The structural driver is a documented supply deficit in occupational health services across Ireland at a moment of structurally rising demand. Ireland's expanded statutory sick pay scheme, reaching five days from 2024 and continuing to scale, alongside ongoing public sector absence management reform, is increasing employer demand for independent occupational health assessment and fitness-for-work decisions at exactly the moment when island-wide occupational health capacity remains underdeveloped relative to UK comparator markets. Medmark is the only provider with national network scale capable of absorbing that demand at volume while maintaining clinical consistency.
The Phoenix investment targets four strategic vectors: clinical team expansion, technology and digital health platform investment, enhanced customer reporting and complementary acquisitions. This is a buy-and-build model that replicates Medmark's own Blackwell acquisition logic at greater speed and scale with PE capital backing.
For the sector, Phoenix's €70 million commitment to an Irish occupational health platform confirms that mid-market PE is actively valuing Irish healthcare services businesses with strong clinical governance and scalable delivery models.
