Industry NewsLifeCellsNI opens Northern Ireland's first advanced biobanking facility at Derry's Ebrington Square
Northern Ireland's first dedicated advanced biobanking facility has opened in Derry, ending a longstanding gap in regulated human tissue storage infrastructure that has forced patients, clinics and research organisations across the island of Ireland to rely on facilities elsewhere in the UK.
According to the Belfast Telegraph, the LifeCellsNI facility at Ebrington Square provides long-term cryogenic storage, controlled laboratory processing within a cleanroom environment, and contingency biobanking services for healthcare providers, universities and private life sciences companies. The facility is working towards full licensing by the Human Tissue Authority, the UK's regulatory body for human tissue.
Founded by health innovation and life sciences specialist Catherine King, LifeCellsNI is designed to give patients, clinicians and researchers local, compliant access to cell and tissue storage — materials that may support future treatments in regenerative medicine, cancer care and personalised therapies.
King said the facility addresses a structural deficit that has constrained Northern Ireland's participation in advanced medicine. "Until now, the region has lacked the regulated biobanking infrastructure required to fully participate in advanced therapy programmes and regenerative medicine research. This facility removes that barrier, enabling health trusts, universities and private life sciences companies to securely and compliantly store samples locally, without the significant cost of building and maintaining their own facilities."
The facility's first stem cell donor, Orla Flack from Strabane, said the experience carried personal significance. "It's not something we would ever hope to need but the security of knowing that it's there if something ever went wrong gives us peace of mind. Being the first person to store my cells here is a great privilege."
