Irish patients get access to world-class care in Valencia under EU scheme
A new state-of-the-art hospital in Valencia is set to treat up to 1,000 Irish patients annually under the EU Cross Border Healthcare Directive — a move that could redefine how national healthcare systems work with international private providers.
Vithas Valencia Turia Hospital, in partnership with Healthcare Abroad, will deliver high-demand procedures such as hip and knee replacements, helping to ease pressure on Ireland’s overburdened system. With 64 private rooms, 8 theatres, and 7 ICUs, the facility offers premium care without the wait, while treatment costs are reimbursed by the HSE.
This signals a strategic shift — not just for patient care, but for how healthcare operators might scale capacity and reach by partnering across borders. With a growing number of Irish patients missing life milestones due to delayed procedures, the demand for timely, trusted alternatives is undeniable.
Could this be a blueprint for solving domestic capacity issues through cross-border partnerships?
