A new specialist surgical centre is set to open in Ballsbridge, Dublin this July following the completion of a €4.7 million funding round, with its founders positioning it as Ireland's first centre of excellence for advanced dermatological surgery and minor surgical procedures.

According to the Business Post, Surgical Institute Dublin was established by Institute of Dermatologists founders Caitriona Ryan and Nicola Ralph alongside healthcare entrepreneur Conor Murphy, who serves as chief executive. The funding round was backed by more than 20 physician investors alongside the founding team, with no involvement from private equity or international investment funds.

The purpose-built facility will bring together more than 30 specialist consultants spanning dermatology, Mohs surgery, plastic surgery, oculoplastics, pathology and medical oncology. The centre expects to create 25 jobs at opening, scaling to 50 within two years.

Ahead of opening, the institute has secured agreements with Vhi and Irish Life Health, with Ryan confirming that advanced discussions are ongoing with Laya Healthcare and Level Health regarding coverage under eligible plans.

Murphy said the centre's ambulatory model addresses structural inefficiencies in conventional hospital settings. "By focusing on advanced ambulatory surgery, we are addressing the inefficiencies of traditional inpatient hospital environments while significantly expanding access to high quality, consultant-delivered surgical services."

Ryan said the institute was created to meet a clearly identified clinical gap. "Dermatologists have witnessed the growing gap between demand and access to truly specialist skin cancer and dermatological surgery care. Surgical Institute Dublin was created to close that gap."

The consultant partnership model adopted by the institute is relatively uncommon in the Irish private healthcare market, where institutional and private equity ownership has dominated recent development activity.
