Orwell Healthcare expands Dublin care facility and workforce

Orwell Healthcare is set to increase its premium residential care capacity in Dublin with a €30m renovation and the addition of 200 new full and part-time positions.

The Rathgar facility will reopen early next year, bringing the group’s total bed capacity to 308 across its two Dublin sites.

The recruitment drive covers clinical nurse managers, staff nurses, healthcare assistants, social care professionals, accommodation staff, and administrative roles. All new hires will undergo structured induction programmes complemented by ongoing online and on-site professional development.

The upgraded facility features high-specification private and shared spaces, purpose-built therapy rooms, quiet family areas, a roof garden, and integrated digital supports, including online training platforms and a digital library for staff. Residents will benefit from an expanded programme of social, cultural, and community-based activities, supported by the Orwell Bus.

Peter Jones, group CEO, emphasised that the expansion addresses a critical national shortage of residential care beds, projected to exceed 15,000 by 2040.

“This development is a major investment in the future of residential care in Ireland. We are creating a premium environment where comfort, dignity, and clinical excellence come together," said Jones. "With the national need for care beds growing year on year, this project expands our capacity at a critical moment and provides a home families can trust for their loved ones.”

Nester Changunda, director of nursing, noted the facility’s design supports high-quality, safe care while fostering community engagement and meaningful daily life for residents.

The investment represents a major development for private healthcare in Ireland, combining workforce expansion, enhanced facilities, and digital integration to meet the demands of an ageing population.
