OnMed expands private healthcare access with charter school CareStations
OnMed, a U.S.-based private healthcare provider, is expanding its CareStation kiosks to 30 charter schools as part of a pilot initiative, aiming to create scalable access to medical care in underserved communities. The company plans to extend the programme nationally.
The project is executed in partnership with 22Beacon, a nonprofit that provides real estate and investment support to charter schools. “22Beacon's portfolio represents over $1 billion in charter school real estate across 31 states,” said Alan Washington, president and CEO of 22Beacon. “As a national nonprofit, our existing infrastructure eliminates typical barriers to implementation, allowing us to move quickly to serve communities that need healthcare access most urgently.”
The 8-by-10-foot CareStations offer a hybrid care model, combining in-person diagnostics with telemedicine. Patients encounter a soundproof environment where a nurse practitioner appears on a 65-inch screen to conduct examinations, supported by advanced monitoring tools, including pulse oximeters, blood pressure cuffs, weight scales, and thermal imaging.
“Schools are already trusted anchors in communities,” said Karthik Ganesh, CEO of OnMed. “This partnership empowers them to address one of the biggest barriers to student success, which is healthcare access. We're creating a scalable model that brings care directly to those who need it most.”
The stations cover routine issues such as infections, respiratory conditions, allergies, heartburn, and headaches, with approximately 85% of patients not requiring specialist referrals. Prescriptions or follow-up referrals are managed digitally, and each station self-disinfects after use.
OnMed currently operates across seven U.S. states and Puerto Rico, and anticipates significant growth in 2026. The company generates revenue through partnerships with governments, providers, and educational institutions.
