UK medical technology company Micrima has opened the country's first dedicated breast density scanning clinic in Bristol, bringing a radiation-free diagnostic tool to women in the region following European regulatory approval.

According to a report by The Business Desk, Micrima's Mi~Scan technology measures breast density, a major cancer risk factor affecting around 40% of women over 40. Research published by the company shows nearly nine in ten women in the UK are unaware of their breast density, while 53% do not know it can affect how easily cancer is detected.

The scan takes a few minutes with no compression or radiation, with results provided in a personalised report showing breast density and individual risk. The technology has been evaluated through clinical trials and community studies supported by NHS trusts and university researchers in Manchester and Leeds, and has received regulatory approval across Europe.

Adrian Waller, chief executive of Micrima, said: "Our aim is to give women access to clear, personalised information so they can better understand their own breast health and make informed decisions with confidence."

Prof Sacha Howell, clinical senior lecturer in breast oncology at the University of Manchester, said breast density is a factor "most women are never told about, despite the impact it can have on both cancer risk and detection."

Women in Bristol and the South West can now register for a breast density scan, with a limited number of free appointments available during the initial launch period. Micrima plans to expand access over the next 12 to 24 months through additional clinic locations and partnerships with healthcare providers and employers.

The company has stated its intention to make breast density measurement more widely available across Europe and in countries that accept European regulated medical devices, with the UK identified as the starting point for that broader rollout.

For private healthcare operators, the emergence of dedicated breast density scanning as a standalone service represents a growing opportunity to integrate preventive diagnostics into existing women's health pathways, particularly as patient demand for personalised, proactive health monitoring continues to rise.
