Industry NewsMedtronic completes $550 million acquisition of neurovascular device maker Scientia Vascular
US medical technology company Medtronic has finalised its acquisition of neurovascular device specialist Scientia Vascular in a deal valued at $550 million (€490 million).
According to a report by Modern Healthcare, the transaction completed on 12 June, bringing Scientia's guidewires and catheters into Medtronic's existing neurovascular portfolio, which includes liquid embolics, stent retrievers, and flow diverters. Scientia's technologies are designed to help physicians navigate complex anatomy when treating neurovascular conditions including stroke, where precise device control across difficult vascular pathways is central to procedural outcomes.
The combination positions Medtronic to offer a more comprehensive set of tools across neurovascular intervention. Scientia's catheter and guidewire capabilities address a distinct but closely related need to Medtronic's existing embolisation and flow diversion products, broadening the range of clinical scenarios the combined portfolio can serve and reducing the need for physicians to source complementary access devices from separate suppliers.
Medtronic confirmed it will retain Scientia's two facilities in Salt Lake City, including its manufacturing site, preserving the operational and production infrastructure that underpins the acquired product lines. Integration of Scientia employees into Medtronic's systems, human resources programmes, and benefits is expected to take place over the course of the summer, with formal migration of staff underway in the months ahead.
For private healthcare providers and procurement decision-makers, the acquisition reflects a continuing pattern of consolidation among major medtech suppliers in the neurovascular space.
As stroke treatment protocols grow more sophisticated and device-dependent, health systems sourcing neurovascular intervention tools may find an increasingly concentrated supplier landscape shaping their procurement options and negotiating positions.
Operators with significant neurovascular programmes will want to monitor how the integration affects product availability, pricing structures, and the long-term development roadmap for both the Medtronic and Scientia device ranges.
