Hologic names former Baxter chief José Almeida as CEO after Blackstone and TPG take-private closes

US women's health medical technology company Hologic has named José Almeida as its new chief executive with immediate effect, following the completion of an $18.3 billion (€15.4 billion) take-private transaction by private equity firms Blackstone and TPG.

According to Medtech Dive, outgoing CEO Steve MacMillan had been set to retire once the deal closed, with Hologic confirming Almeida's appointment in connection with the transaction completing on Tuesday. Almeida retired as CEO of medical products group Baxter in February 2025.

During his tenure at Baxter, Almeida oversaw the $10.5 billion (€8.8 billion) acquisition of patient care technology company Hillrom, alongside the divestiture of Baxter's biopharma solutions and kidney care businesses, moves designed to sharpen the group's focus on higher-growth market segments.

Hologic closed last year with $2.17 billion (€1.8 billion) in cash and cash equivalents. At a board meeting held to consider the take-private offer, directors noted the company's strong balance sheet and its capacity to fund innovation and acquisitions, while also flagging the underperformance of medtech stocks and the risk that short-term investor focus could constrain longer-term strategic decision-making.

Hologic's announcement highlighted Almeida's record of operational improvement and portfolio transformation at Baxter as central to his appointment. Blackstone and TPG have yet to publicly outline their detailed strategic intentions for the business.

Hologic is a leading developer of diagnostics, medical imaging and surgical products focused on women's health, with core offerings spanning breast health, gynaecological health and skeletal health.
