Blarney-headquartered medical device distributor Healthcare21 is projecting revenue growth of 5% this year, building on turnover of €136 million in 2024 as the company deepens its reach across Irish hospitals, private care providers and distribution networks.

According to the Business Post, the company was founded in 2003 by Owen Curtin and now employs 360 staff, working with 200 distributors in the Irish market across 15 therapeutic areas. Chief executive Edel O'Sullivan, who took over the role last year having joined the business 12 years ago, said the company's scope is deliberately broad.

"We're a sales, marketing and services distributor. We take leading global brands and bring them to the Irish health service. There's no area of the hospital that we don't cover. From bandages to room care through to taking blood oxygen levels and surgical products, we facilitate a broad range."

O'Sullivan said the company's expansion from four or five therapeutic areas to 15 was driven by active listening to market demand. "It was a case of listening to the market needs and going out to find the manufacturers that could meet that."

A key strategic priority is supporting the shift of patient care outside of acute hospital settings. "The market is evolving quickly. We need to maintain that people can get out of hospitals quicker by bringing products that meet that need. That means bringing more wearables to hospitals. We are utilising more products now to better manage patients in the home setting."

Healthcare21's origins trace to a single-brand distribution agreement with Tyco, secured when Curtin identified a gap in the Irish market for exclusive, conflict-free brand representation. The company began operating from Curtin's home before scaling into its current national presence.
