Industry NewsCharter Medical Group appoints Brian Fitzgerald as CEO ahead of €85m expansion programme
Irish private hospital operator Charter Medical Group has appointed Brian Fitzgerald as its Group Chief Executive Officer, bringing one of the country's most experienced healthcare executives on board to lead an ambitious expansion programme that includes a major capital investment across its Mullingar and Dublin facilities.
As reported by Midlands 103, Fitzgerald joins Charter Medical from St Vincent's Private Hospital, part of St Vincent's Healthcare Group, where he served as Chief Executive Officer for four years from 2022 to 2026, also holding the dual role of Chief Financial Officer during the first 18 months of his tenure. He previously held senior executive roles at St James's Hospital and The Beacon.
Beyond operational leadership, Fitzgerald has contributed extensively to the governance of the Irish healthcare sector, serving as Chairperson of the Irish National Haemophilia Council from 2019 to 2025 and as Chairperson of the Private Hospitals Association from 2023 to 2025. He continues to serve as a member of the National Patient Safety Council.
Charter Medical chair Tom Byrne said the appointment reflects the group's growth ambitions. "Brian is a proven healthcare leader with a strong track record of strategic delivery, operational excellence and partnership development. His appointment comes at an important time for Charter Medical as we continue to expand our services and invest in greater access to high-quality healthcare across Ireland."
Fitzgerald said the group's trajectory was a key factor in his decision. "The Group has ambitious plans for growth, a strong clinical reputation and a clear commitment to patient-centred care. I look forward to working with our teams to build on that momentum and support the delivery of exceptional healthcare services nationwide."
Charter Medical recently announced an €85 million capital plan comprising a €50 million investment in its Mullingar private hospital facility and a new ambulatory surgery centre in central Dublin. Overall staff numbers are expected to grow from 370 to 700 as the expansion progresses.
