Beacon Hospital and main contractor Clancy Construction have marked the topping out of the hospital's €100 million (€100 million) expansion in Sandyford, Dublin, with the new eight-storey extension reaching its highest structural point. The milestone advances one of Ireland's largest ongoing healthcare builds, built on the site of the former Beacon Hotel and linked to the existing hospital from levels three to eight.
On completion, the project will add 70 inpatient beds, a new emergency department, a new oncology day unit and four additional day theatres, and is expected to create about 240 new roles across clinical, operational and support functions. Beacon Hospital was acquired by Macquarie Asset Management in 2024 in a deal ultimately valued at just over €342 million, according to The Irish Times, with the hospital generating almost €194 million in revenue in 2024 amid continued strong demand.
"Topping out the building is a significant milestone in the delivery of Beacon Hospital's expansion and in our continued investment in the future of healthcare in Ireland," said Michael Cullen, chief executive of Beacon Hospital. "Once complete, this development will increase our overall capacity by 40 percent, with 70 additional inpatient beds, a new Emergency Department, a new Oncology Day Unit and four additional day theatres. It will strengthen our ability to respond to growing demand for acute and specialist care."
"We are delighted with the collaborative approach demonstrated by Beacon Hospital and the entire construction team throughout the project to date," said Chris Chambers, Dublin regional director of Clancy Construction. "Delivering a project of this scale alongside a fully operational hospital requires careful planning, constant coordination and a strong partnership between all stakeholders."
The works are being carried out directly alongside the operational hospital, requiring close coordination between Beacon Hospital, Clancy and the wider project team to maintain uninterrupted patient care throughout construction, with the building envelope now including a new façade to the front of the extension.
The structural driver behind the expansion is sustained demand for acute and specialist capacity in the Dublin private hospital market, with institutional ownership under Macquarie providing the capital base to fund large-scale physical expansion rather than incremental capacity additions.
For the sector, the project confirms that infrastructure-backed private hospital owners are committing nine-figure sums to physical capacity expansion in Ireland's largest private healthcare market.
