Ambience Healthcare launches EHR-integrated conversational AI tool for inpatient nursing

San Francisco-based healthcare AI company Ambience Healthcare has introduced a conversational artificial intelligence tool designed to give inpatient nurses instant, citation-backed access to patient information directly within electronic health record systems.

According to Business Wire, Chart Chat for Nursing allows nurses to pose plain-language questions about a patient's chart, drawing in real time from physician progress notes, orders, recent laboratory results and hospital policy documentation. Every response includes full source citations, enabling nurses to trace answers directly to the underlying clinical record. Cleveland Clinic is the first health system to pilot the tool.

The product addresses a well-documented pressure point in inpatient care. Research cited by Ambience indicates that documentation and information retrieval can consume between 25 and 41 per cent of a nurse's working time in complex clinical environments, time that would otherwise be directed toward direct patient care.

Co-founder and CEO Nikhil Buduma said the tool was built around a specific clinical need. "Nurses have told us clearly: the problem isn't just how long it takes to chart, it's how long it takes to understand the patient in front of them. Chart Chat for Nursing meets nurses where they already are, inside the EHR, and gives them the full picture of every patient in seconds."

The platform incorporates a three-tier safety architecture spanning deployment-stage evaluations, real-time response quality monitoring and continuous nurse-in-the-loop feedback. The tool is strictly scoped to clinical queries and is designed to flag ambiguity or data gaps explicitly rather than generate responses that require further verification.

Ambience said Chart Chat for Nursing is the first stage of a broader nursing-focused product roadmap, developed in close collaboration with frontline nurses and nursing informatics teams, including Cleveland Clinic's nursing informatics specialists.
