AI in Irish hospitals signals shift in patient care expectations

Ireland’s first in-hospital AI centre has launched at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, positioning private and public healthcare for a data-driven future. Already in use for fracture detection and synthetic MRI scans, the AI hub is also building tools to match cancer patients to clinical trials and assist in rapid diagnosis of spinal injuries.

Consultants are now exploring AI’s potential to analyse ECGs for early detection of cardiac blockages, an application that could be transformative in emergency care. But despite these advances, funding gaps and the absence of clear regulations are slowing national uptake.

It's clear that AI is not a distant innovation. It’s becoming a patient expectation. Hospitals not investing now may risk falling behind as clinical decision support becomes the new standard of care.
