Affidea, the pan-European private healthcare group majority-owned by Groupe Bruxelles Lambert (GBL), has announced a strategic co-investment partnership with LIPS Healthcare (London International Patient Services), the UK's largest private consultant-led multi-specialty group. The partnership involves co-investment in a new 40,000 sq ft multi-specialty clinic on Prince of Wales Drive, London, and an extension of the existing Battersea Power Station Clinic; the investment amount is not publicly disclosed. Affidea holds a strategic minority stake in LIPS.
Affidea is headquartered in the Netherlands, operating approximately 420 centres across 14 countries and supporting more than 15 million patients annually. GBL acquired Affidea in 2022 for up to €1 billion. UK-specific turnover and EBITDA figures are not separately disclosed. LIPS Healthcare was founded in 2016 by orthopaedic consultants Paul Culpan and Ibraheim El-Daly, is headquartered at Battersea Power Station, and brings together more than 170 teaching hospital consultants across 25-plus specialities, treating more than 70,000 patients annually. LIPS's turnover and EBITDA are not publicly disclosed. Advisors: none mentioned.
The structural driver is a market mechanism: NHS waiting lists have created sustained demand for private outpatient access, with the UK private healthcare market valued at approximately $14.8 billion in 2026 and projected to grow to $21.4 billion by 2033. The consultant-led model LIPS has built, where specialists retain clinical autonomy rather than becoming salaried employees, is attracting senior NHS consultants who will not accept a purely employed relationship. Affidea's strategic logic is to acquire customer base, clinical credibility, and a London footprint in one transaction rather than building from scratch.
For LIPS, the gain is capital and operational infrastructure to execute a clinic pipeline it could not fund organically. For Affidea, the transaction deepens its UK presence beyond its existing Fortius orthopaedic clinics and the forthcoming Wimbledon ambulatory centre, creating a Southwest London cluster. GBL's 2022 acquisition of Affidea was explicitly predicated on accelerating M&A into fragmented European markets; this partnership fits that mandate directly.
The verdict: the consultant-led model is now the consolidation vehicle of choice in UK private healthcare, and Affidea's minority entry into LIPS signals that pan-European operators are ready to deploy capital into it before valuations reflect that consensus.
